Antoon Versteegde (1953) graduated cum laude in 1978 from the Academy of Art and Design in ’s-Hertogenbosch. He creates large-scale, temporary installations using lightweight materials such as bamboo, flags, rope and elastic bands. His Community Art projects often emerge through collaboration with local artists, volunteers and audiences, with participation and shared experience at the heart of the process.
Over more than 40 years, Versteegde has realized over 650 interactive bamboo projects in the Netherlands and abroad. Although the installations eventually disappear, the collective experience remains as part of a shared cultural memory.
For Electric Grand, he collaborates with composer, pianist, and conceptual artist Bart van Dongen. Inspired by experiments with prepared piano, they developed the idea of transforming the 72 keys of a Yamaha CP-70 into an independent sound system, with each tone amplified through its own speaker and placed within a bamboo structure. The pianist performs at the centre, while visitors can move through the installation and experience the sounds as a spatial composition.
