Community Art
Community art is an art form in which professional artists work together with residents, groups or communities. The emphasis is not only on the finished artwork, but on the shared creative process. Participants contribute their own stories, ideas and skills, often in response to a social issue, local identity or shared concern. In this way, community art can bring people together, make stories visible and transform places through art.
Antoon Versteegde creates interactive installations in which people are not spectators but active participants. Since 1984, he has worked with bamboo, music, nature, technology and public space to create temporary environments that invite people to build, explore, listen and interact.
Bamboo is central to many of his projects. Lightweight, flexible and sustainable, it can be transformed through collective effort into monumental structures. Simple individual connections become a strong and resilient whole—a metaphor for how people can create something meaningful together. For Versteegde, the process of building and the encounters it creates are as important as the finished installation.
Bart van Dongen approaches community art through music. As a pianist, composer and artistic initiator, he brings professional musicians, amateurs and audiences together in projects where collaboration and shared creativity are central. In Eldorado, for example, local choirs, brass bands and residents worked alongside professional artists to create site-specific performances on farms throughout Brabant.
In the Aanhaak Fanfare, participants spend ten days collectively creating and rehearsing new music. Everyone can contribute—regardless of age or musical experience. The result is not simply a concert, but a temporary musical community in which participation, creativity and encounter are the true starting points.
