Community Art as Artistic Practice

Since 1984, he has developed interactive installations in which visitors are not merely spectators but active participants. His work emerges through collaboration—not only between people, but also between art, music, nature, technology and space.
Bamboo often forms the starting point of his installations. Lightweight, flexible and sustainable, it enables the creation of monumental structures through collective effort. Each individual connection is simple, yet together they form a resilient whole. In this way, bamboo becomes more than a construction material; it is a metaphor for the way people create meaning together.
His installations only reach their full potential through human interaction. Whether people build, walk, listen, move or simply encounter one another within the work, participation is an essential part of the artistic experience. The creative process process of building is just as important as the finished installation.

Bart van Dongen develops community music projects that bring together professional musicians, amateur performers, and audiences. As a pianist, composer, and artistic initiator, he sees music as a way to connect people through collaboration and shared creativity. The artistic process is just as important as the final performance.
In projects such as Eldorado, a music theatre production by Het Zuidelijk Toneel performed on farms across the Dutch province of Brabant, local choirs, brass bands, and residents work alongside professional artists to create a site-specific performance.
With the Aanhaak Fanfare, participants spend ten days rehearsing and collectively creating a new composition, culminating in a public concert or live play-along session. Everyone is invited to contribute ideas—whether a melody, rhythm, drawing, or sound. Age, experience, or background are no barrier. The result is a temporary musical community where creativity, inclusion, and participation take centre stage.

Al sinds 1984 ontwikkelt hij interactieve installaties waarin bezoekers geen passieve toeschouwers zijn, maar actieve deelnemers. Zijn werk ontstaat door samenwerking—niet alleen tussen mensen, maar ook tussen kunst, muziek, natuur, technologie en ruimte.
Bamboe vormt vaak het vertrekpunt van zijn installaties. Dankzij de lichte, flexibele en duurzame eigenschappen is het mogelijk om door middel van een gezamenlijke inspanning monumentale structuren te creëren. Elke individuele verbinding is eenvoudig, maar samen vormen ze een veerkrachtig geheel. Zo wordt bamboe meer dan een bouwmateriaal; het is een metafoor voor de manier waarop mensen gezamenlijk betekenis creëren.
Zijn installaties bereiken pas hun volledige potentie door menselijke interactie. Of mensen nu bouwen, rondlopen, luisteren, bewegen of elkaar simpelweg ontmoeten binnen het werk, participatie is een essentieel onderdeel van de artistieke ervaring. Het creatieve proces van bouwen is minstens zo belangrijk als de uiteindelijke installatie.
Antoon Versteegde beschouwt community art als een vorm van collectieve verkenning. Bart van Dongen ontwikkelt community projecten waarin professionele musici, amateur-muzikanten en publiek samen muziek maken. Als pianist, componist en initiatiefnemer ziet hij muziek als een middel om mensen met elkaar te verbinden. Niet alleen het concert telt, maar vooral het gezamenlijke maakproces.

Met de Aanhaak Fanfare nodigt Bart van Dongen deelnemers uit om in tien dagen tijd een nieuwe compositie te ontwikkelen en uit te voeren. Iedereen kan ideeën aandragen – een melodie, ritme, tekening of geluid – die samen uitgroeien tot één gezamenlijk muziekstuk. Leeftijd, ervaring of achtergrond spelen daarbij geen rol. Iedereen is welkom, ook mensen met een visuele of auditieve beperking.
Zo ontstaan tijdelijke muzikale gemeenschappen waarin samenwerking, creativiteit en ontmoeting centraal staan.
